Usability certified linux client

Yesterday our LiMux client was certified by the TÜV for its usability. It is the first linux based client world wide with this certificate, as far as we know :-)

The great possibilities to customize free software, in our case the KDE gui, made it possible for us to implement to results of the usability check. Mainly we changed (background) colours, names of menues and applications, sometimes we removed or added functions in menues - nothing special for us, but we hope to improve the ease of use of the client.

I think it’s great, that the first usability certified linux client is a Debian GNU/Linux based client.

The german press release is at the project’s website.

Floschi, how comes that LiMUx is *not* available for anyone else, as either a Download or a CD that can be bought?

The GPL requires to present a written offer to obtain the source code.

I mean, 11,000+ or Muenchen people will use it, but the rest of the Linux community can only see it in some PDF presentations!

    How open-source is that?

(OK, I know it’s Debian based.)

    Hi,

we don’t change the source code, we mainly do customizations and configurations. If you use the available software, you use the same like we do.

If we find bugs or improve the code, we report them using the usal ways of each free software project, so that everone can benefit. There’s nothing behind “closed doors” in Munich.

But: yes, we want to offer a downloadable LiMux-client to the public, but there are some technical difficulties to solve. At the moment the whole client needs our LDAP-backend to start up. There were plans to publish a live-cd at the upcoming Linuxtag in Berlin, but they have been unrealistic. There are only a few people in team and you can image that our primary goal is the get more and more clients running at our administration.

We want to give back the client as a whole to the community, but please give us some time to do this; we can’t do everything at the same time ;-)

    Greets,

    Florian
