Today started the first Linuxtag at its new location Messe Berlin. My first action was to give a talk about our project’s progress, as I told on monday. But then everything changed in comparison to last year. In 2006 there were only the exhibitors visiting themselves on the first day. This year our shared booth (together with Debian GNU/Linux and FAI) was crowded until afternoon. Great, I hope this will continue on the next days

There have been some television stations interviewing exhibitors, so I hope the media will broadcast some short info spots about Linuxtag and especially LiMux. A 5 minutes interview by the ZDF is online available: here

Additionally I attended an interesting public discussion between some IT leads from the city of Berlin about the future of open source software in Germany’s capital. They face similar organizational problems like we do in Munich and as far as I understand they’ll solve them in the mid-term, but want to try solutions for one example city district asap. The news coverage will show the details during the next weeks…

In general, my first impression of the “new” Linuxtag is mainly great, motivated organizers trying to do their best, a great location at Messe Berlin and a lot of interested visitors - go on this way!

Early in the upcoming tuesday’s morning my one week trip to Berlin starts. Together with 3 colleagues I am going to present our LiMux project at a booth (hall 12, booth 57) at Linuxtag and during a talk on wednesday morning (see details).

It’s a shared booth, mainly from Debian GNU/Linux, together with FAI and us. We’ll show our usability certified and Debian based LiMux client, which can be distributed by FAI and configured by GOsa. Additionally we’ll present the contents of our awarded e-learning solution and WollMux, our tool for OpenOffice.org in development. Of course, we are waiting for you and for your questions

Cu in Berlin from tuesday afternoon until saturday night

Heute war Bundesligafinale, an dieser Stelle Glückwunsch nach Stuttgart, ihr habt es euch verdient

In der Allianz-Arena stand FC Bayern gegen Mainz 05 auf dem Programm. Aufgrund der totalen Bedeutungslosigkeit des Spiels war es denn auch Nebensache. Zunächst war es ein echtes Fest, beide Fangruppen haben nahezu alles gefeiert, was es irgendwie zu feiern gab. La Ola immerwieder und dann kam der Abschied von Mehmet Scholl. Das war eine Stimmung, wirklich traumhaft. Scholli, mach’s gut.

Tja, aber das war der erfreuliche Teil des Nachmittags. Dann kam die Stunde der “echten” Fußballfans. Wie letztens von mir berichtet hat der FCB den agressiven und um alles andere als Fußball bemühten Fans der “Schickeria München” Hausverbot erteilt. Das hielt den harten Kern aber anscheinend nicht davon ab, trotzdem auf sich aufmerksam zu machen. Zunächst wurden nur einige Transparente ausgerollt, doch dann wurde diffamiert. Erst ging es gegen den Fanbeauftragten, danach gegen den Verin als solches. Man musssich das mal vorstellen, da feiert fast ein ganzes Stadion den Saisonausklang, aber ein Haufen Unverbesserlicher irrer “Fans” schreit “scheiß FCB”.

Es ist schon schade zu sehen, was da passiert. Zumeist ist das in der Bundesliga nicht so offensichtlich, es passiert aber auch und vor allem in den unteren Ligen.

Diese Fans sind meiner Meinung nach nur auf Krawall aus. Schade, dass sie den Fußball entdeckt haben

Yesterday our LiMux client was certified by the TÜV for its usability. It is the first linux based client world wide with this certificate, as far as we know

The great possibilities to customize free software, in our case the KDE gui, made it possible for us to implement to results of the usability check. Mainly we changed (background) colours, names of menues and applications, sometimes we removed or added functions in menues - nothing special for us, but we hope to improve the ease of use of the client.

I think it’s great, that the first usability certified linux client is a Debian GNU/Linux based client.
