use of proprietary video codecs in offical video streams of the EU
Nowadays, the debianforum.de community gives you the possibillity to sign an Open Letter regarding the use of proprietary video codecs in offical video streams of the European Union. Here the Introduction
The EU offers video streams of EU council meetings at http://ceuweb.belbone.be/. These streams are encoded in the “Windows Media Video” format, a proprietary video codec developed by Microsoft. Only users of operating systems provided and licensed by Microsoft or Apple can view these streams in a legally and technically correct manner. The legal situation for users of other operating systems like GNU/Linux or BSD is uncertain.
In a debianform.de’s discussion thread (german only) it was suggested to anounce an open letter to the council of the European Union on this subject. You donĀ“t need to be an member of debianforum.de to sign this letter but you should be an resident of the EU.
You can find the whole letter at wiki.debianforum.de/OffenerBriefEUStreamingEn and the related discussion at www.debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77823.
