My insights from “open source meets business” 2007

Sonntag, 28. Januar 2007

I went to Nürnberg last thursday to give a speech together with Frank Siebert (one of our consultants from DBI company) about LiMux’s migration to OpenOffice.org. Our talk was pretty well visited and the auditors were interested in our experiences. Of course, our self developed tool WollMux got much attention. And my guess was confirmed, that there’s much to do to satisfy the high level of interest in our progress. We’ll work on this.

But the conference was also interesting for me. I learned that others are often using more pragmatic solutions than we do. For example, the german city of Schwäbisch Hall uses a NX based terminal server solution (including heartbeat for HA) to get some business applications running for a couple of workplaces. Very interesting. And there are many other public offices and schools doing their daily business or teaching with free software. Most of them just do it. Sometimes a more pragmatic solution will be much better than the best detailed way ever. But discussing in heated meeting rooms and drinking coffee means fun, doesn’t it ;-)

Jan Wildeboer from RedHat showed me the upcoming 100 Dollar laptop, which is designed for daily use in schools in developing countries, to provide them with access to knowledge and modern forms of education. Nice machine.

Finally I had the chance to discuss some facts for an upcoming european workshop on document exchange formats which I’m going to attend in march in Berlin. I think it’s important that there’s are really open exchange format for public authorities in Europe to use. Maybe there will be the first step to arrange this.

I was surpised by the very well organizated conference. Good job, heise!

Today I received the confirmation email. LiMux will be part of “Linux Live” demo at this year’s “Chemnitzer Linux Tage” conference in march (3rd and 4th). Additionally, I’ll give a speech about the current progress of our project on sunday noon (12pm).

I’m looking forward to CLT 2007 - cu ;-)

Windstärke 12 auf der Richterskala?

Donnerstag, 18. Januar 2007

use of proprietary video codecs in offical video streams of the EU

Dienstag, 16. Januar 2007

Nowadays, the debianforum.de community gives you the possibillity to sign an Open Letter regarding the use of proprietary video codecs in offical video streams of the European Union. Here the Introduction

The EU offers video streams of EU council meetings at http://ceuweb.belbone.be/. These streams are encoded in the “Windows Media Video” format, a proprietary video codec developed by Microsoft. Only users of operating systems provided and licensed by Microsoft or Apple can view these streams in a legally and technically correct manner. The legal situation for users of other operating systems like GNU/Linux or BSD is uncertain.

In a debianform.de’s discussion thread (german only) it was suggested to anounce an open letter to the council of the European Union on this subject. You don´t need to be an member of debianforum.de to sign this letter but you should be an resident of the EU.

You can find the whole letter at wiki.debianforum.de/OffenerBriefEUStreamingEn and the related discussion at www.debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77823.

“Little Miss Landrat”

“Full Loden Jacket”

“Das Präsidium schlägt zurück”

“Die üblichen Bedächtigen”

“Das Wunder in der Nymphenburger Straße”

“Plattlertoon”

“E.S. - Der Außerämtische”

“Arsen und Spitzenstoibchen”

“Jenseits von Ede”

“Mister Ed, das schwächelnde Pferd” […[
