the LiMux sources?
Dienstag, 28. November 2006Around the 19th september this year (we started the roll out of version 1 of our base client) we’ve been often asked “where can I download your distro?” and sometimes there was the demand on us to provide the sources.
Of course, we want to publish a downloadable version of our customized LiMux client, but at the moment the further development to fullfill the requirements is top priority. Additionally, there are many dependencies to our internal infrastructure, especially ldap. In mid of 2007 we’ll talk about how to build and publish a downloadable version.
The other question was where to get our sources. This was often asked very abrasively, but I don’t get the point. There’s free software. We take it, configurate it, customize it and run it inside our municipality. We do qa and find bugs, report them using the common bug tracking tools and, if possible, (sometimes) provide a fix/patch to the free software projects. We don’t develop extensions or addons of these free software on our own only for use inside our offices. But we help to increase the quality of free software as far as we can.
The development of FAI (software distribution) and GOsa (system and config management) is done for us mainly by our service provider together with the community and is available on the public source code in cvs. So everybody can download the sources of the software we’re using.
In my opinion, there is no necessity for us to publish the same source code again, e.g. on our web site. Perhaps we’ll do this together with the client in 2007. I think this is free software license compliant, e.g. GPL.
But maybe the abrasively asked questions have another background…
